Unlike a maze that has many dead ends and can cause confusion and fear; Walking a labyrinth's single winding pathway offers an opportunity to connect with self, others, nature and/or higher power, simply by putting one foot in front of the other.
Significant long-term health benefits can be experienced with regular walking meditation. These include eliciting the "relaxation response", which reduces blood pressure, decreases heart rate, & muscle tension. Reduced incidence of chronic pain, insomnia and infertility have been found.( Dr. Herbert Benson, Harvard Mind/Body Medical Institute, 2005.) The relaxation response has also been found to counteract several stress related disease processes such as Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's Disease, Alheimer's, Depression, Schizophrenia and anxiety (T. Esch et al, Medical Science Monitor, 2003).
"There are many ways to walk the Labyrinth, ways as unique as each person who comes to walk."
